John Oliver makes great use of inverting the facts, to make it appear Trump is false/stupid/lying,  and therefore. everything his partyline advocacy is true- which is of course blantant propaganda,  dishonest in and of itself,  and he provides abolutely no evidence his position on policies are in return correct when he "attempts" to debunk Trump's positions. John Oliver ends up with a heavily flawed,  easy to debunk argument,  but since he monopolizes his viewer population,  who unlike Trump, don't watch several news sites/channels daily across the political divide (how many of you do this? I do), they are left mixing the timing of the comedy,  the stringing of facts that make sense in sequential consequence but not as a examined whole (the dog1 scratched2 his ear3 with his toes4 and then ordered a pizza5 over the phone6 - any two numbers consequently makes sense,  but the larger statement is bizarre,  something John Oliver excells at), and emotive faces,  playing for a audience searching for validity and espirit. It's closer to brain washing and cultic behavior,  but because it is a isolated audience,  this easy to defeat argument becomes not so easy to denounce and poke holes into. The audience at best only occasionally hears fake news,  from ass clowns like Oliver. It's a monopoly on belief,  and liberal leaders certainly don't want to suspend it.

And look,  this fake news website is reporting on it,  reinforcing the ideological esprite de corps of the audience,  giving a sense of a a larger,  trustworthy network,  all conforming the same cultic world view.
